Dr. Srishti Gupta Narasimhan: On Language
January 2025
Learning a new language as an adult feels like standing on the edge of two worlds—one where thoughts flow freely, and another where words pile up in chaotic gridlock.
Despite a medical degree and three Master’s earned in English, communicating in German often feels like a return to primary school, grasping for words to share ideas, humor, and moments of connection. Mastering Hindi as a child was instinctive, absorbed effortlessly—like learning to ride a bike, never forgotten. Adult learning, however, demands persistence and vulnerability. How often has a German word elbowed out the Spanish I spent years mastering in school and speaking with patients? The frustration is real, but so is the reward. Each attempt edges closer to freeing complex thoughts confined by linguistic barriers. In every language, words connect, express, and create belonging. So we keep trying, failing, and learning.
